High Molecular Weight Chitosan (HMWC) generally refers to chitosan with a molecular weight >700 kDa. Its main feature is the number of intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonds within the polymer chain.Therefore, the molecular chains are more entangled and less soluble in neutral pH aqueous solutions. The above characteristics make it difficult for high molecular weight chitosan molecules to pass through the cell membrane due to its high viscosity, but HMWC shows high adsorption to the cell wall, resulting in cell wall coverage, cell membrane weakening, rupture, and leakage. This is thought to be the mechanism by which HMWC exerts its antimicrobial effect.
