What is Propionic Acid Feed Grade?
Propionic Acid (C₂H₅COOH) is a short-chain fatty acid naturally produced during carbohydrate fermentation. It has strong antimicrobial properties, especially against molds, yeasts, and some bacteria.
In animal feed production, feed-grade propionic acid is commonly used as an effective preservative to prevent fungal growth in grains, compound feed, and stored agricultural products.
Compared with traditional preservatives, propionic acid works by lowering pH and disrupting microbial metabolism, helping maintain feed freshness and nutritional value during storage.

Applications of Propionic Acid Feed Grade
Feed Preservation
Propionic Acid is added to animal feed to prevent mold growth, especially in high-moisture feed ingredients.
Common dosage:
- Grain preservation: 0.1–0.5%
- Compound feed preservation: depending on moisture content and storage conditions
Silage Treatment
Propionic acid helps improve silage stability by:
- Reducing undesirable microorganisms
- Maintaining nutrient value
- Improving aerobic stability after opening
Grain Storage Protection
Used for:
- Corn storage
- Cereal grains
- Agricultural raw materials
to minimize spoilage during long-term storage.
