What's HPMC E5?
HPMC E5 (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose 2910, hypromellose E5) is a low-viscosity, pharmaceutical-grade cellulose ether widely used as an excipient in solid dosage forms. It dissolves in cold water to form clear colloidal solutions and provides excellent binding, film-forming and controlled-release properties for tablets and capsules.
Key facts at a glance:
- CAS: 9004-65-3
- Grade: HPMC 2910 E5 (low viscosity)
- Chemical composition: ~28–30% methoxy, ~7–12% hydroxypropyl
- Typical viscosity: 3–6 mPa·s (apparent viscosity)
Why formulators choose HPMC E5: improved tablet hardness and disintegration control, reliable film coatings that mask taste and protect APIs, and robust matrix-forming behaviour for sustained-release formulations. Pharma-grade COA and TDS are available on request; MOQ 200kg.

Applications
- Binder in Tablets: It is commonly used as a binder in tablet formulations, helping to hold the ingredients together and ensuring uniformity in tablet weight and strength.
- Controlled Release: HPMC E5 is employed in controlled-release formulations, allowing for a gradual release of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) over time, which can improve therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance.
- Thickening Agent: In liquid formulations, such as suspensions and gels, HPMC E5 acts as a thickening agent, improving viscosity and stability.
- Film Coating: It can be used for film coating of tablets, providing a protective layer that can improve stability, mask taste, and enhance appearance.
- Stabilizer in Emulsions: HPMC E5 serves as a stabilizer in emulsions, helping to maintain the dispersion of ingredients in topical formulations.
- Matrix Formulation: In extended-release tablets, it forms a gel matrix that controls the release of drugs, allowing for sustained therapeutic effects.
- Excipient for Hydrophilic Drugs: It is often used as an excipient for hydrophilic drugs, helping to improve solubility and bioavailability.
